About

What kind of jewelry do I make?

I design and create demi-fine jewelry in Lacombe, Alberta.

Demi-fine jewelry is a term used to describe a category of jewelry that falls between fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. It typically refers to pieces made with high-quality materials such as Argentium or Sterling silver, gold-filled wire, gold vermeil (gold-plated silver), or semi-precious stones…but at a more affordable price point compared to fine jewelry.

Demi-fine jewelry offers a balance between luxury and accessibility, making it a popular choice for those seeking high-quality pieces without the higher price tag.

My journey, from accidental to purposeful...

I blame my business on my grandkids. I purchased a rock tumbler to use with them, thinking that would be something fun we could do together. Soon, we had a lot of pretty rocks. It occurred to me that I could make pendants with them.

After some research, I decided to learn wire wrapping. I bought an instruction book, some silver wire, and a few tools--mostly pliers. That was back in November of 2017. I learned a lot with my first projects--including what not to do! (Isn't that the way it always is?)

Since my options for on-site jewelry education are basically non-existent in Lacombe, I started researching online courses and found wirejewelry.com. I purchased several courses, including some live online courses. It was exciting to learn more--including soldering.

I bought more supplies. Then more tools, more equipment, and more courses. I experimented with designs, materials, and processes. My friends and family members received a lot of jewelry gifts from me.

Every chance I had, I worked on jewelry. My inventory continued to grow. At my husband’s suggestion, I started going to local farmers markets. Two ladies visited my table one day and told me about the Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild. I joined it and learned how to make my own cabochons.

Then Covid hit and that changed everything. I started selling online. With a nudge from Flourish and Thrive Academy, I decided to set up a Shopify store and website. A lovely Shopify partner held my hand and encouraged me as I developed it. (Thanks, Cassandra!)

In the meantime, I discovered Jewellery Training Solutions in Australia, which offers professional training courses online. Why not add to my skills? (It is my firm belief that education is never wasted.)

Giving back

I have donated jewelry to:

  • The annual Bionic Golf Tournament (which raises awareness and money for tissue and organ donation research at the University of Alberta);
  • The Burman University golf tournament (which helps fund scholarships);
  • The 2022 Rosedale Valley String Orchestra "Unite for Ukraine" concert and silent auction (to assist a family that emigrated from the Ukraine); and
  • For a few indie book launches.
